Towards a holistic design approach #CraftOpsStrat 16th of May, Helsinki - Elisa HQ

What is the value of design?

To understand design holistically we need to observe & operate in multiple levels identified as craft, operations, & strategy.

Design is not just a function

We contort ourselves into ROI shapes, thinking we are being good business allies but we forget that the value of design is not just in the outcomes, but in the process of designing itself. –Andrea Mignolo

Design is not just a partner

IF YOU WANT - Holistic change THEN YOU NEED - Teamwork + Collaboration WHICH REQUIRES - Communication WHICH REQUIRES - Psychological safety + interpersonal trust WHICH REQUIRES - Active listening + empathy WHICH REQUIRES - Vulnerability WHICH REQUIRES - Self-awareness + self-reflection WHICH REQUIRES - Adult developmental capability

Adapted from Dara Blumenthal PhD - Generative Team Design

The three levels of design Craft - Operations - Strategy

Craft is Doing Design

EXAMPLE - Design Systems

KEY OUTCOMES Speed to market Cost efficiency Cross-collaboration increased

Operations is Enabling Design

EXAMPLE - Design & Research operations

KEY OUTCOMES Increase in design hours Measuring design efficiency Operationalizing processes

Strategy is Directing Design

EXAMPLE - Design Leadership

KEY OUTCOMES Understanding - Make the right thing Delivery - make the product right Learning & Discovery Vision

Emergence

Holistic design is understanding & solving problems in all the 3 levels that design operates

Is that all?

Design in it’s entirety is a wicked challenge

Holistic Accountable Strategic Inclusive & Diverse Impactful Integrated Intentional Data-informed

Holistic (Craft - Operations - Strategy)

Accountable - being able to use Why? & NO!

Strategic - One eye on the horizon, one eye on the next wave By Maria Skaaden

Inclusive & diverse Example by Automattic Design - Inclusive Design Checklist

Impactful - How do we align with UN’s Sustainable development goals?

Integrated Business - Design - Tech

Intentional “Purpose is the shape meaning takes in business.” – Kate O’Neill

Data-Informed Everything else Gut Data Adopted from Chanade Hemming Moving from being data-driven to data-informed

The more we zoom out and observe design as part of a system, we understand that wicked problems require extraordinary solutions, multidisciplinary and inclusive approaches.

So how do we start?
